Finance leadership textbooks are largely written for stable operating environments. Zimbabwean CFOs have had to build their own playbook for something else entirely: sustained, structural uncertainty.

Scenario Planning as a Default Setting

Decisiveness With Incomplete Information

"You cannot wait for certainty here," one finance director told us. "By the time you have full certainty, the decision window has closed. The skill is making a well-reasoned call with sixty percent of the information you'd like to have."

"Uncertainty isn't a temporary condition you push through. In this market, it's the operating environment. You either build the muscle for it or you don't survive as a finance leader here."

Communicating Confidence Without False Certainty

Perhaps the hardest-won skill: communicating clearly and confidently to boards and investors without overstating certainty that doesn't exist. The finance leaders who do this well, several executives noted, are the ones who've earned the most durable trust from their stakeholders.
