Behind many of Zimbabwe's finance leaders is a mentor who opened doors, shared hard lessons, and shaped the way they lead today.

## Why Mentorship Matters in Finance

Technical competence gets a finance professional into the room, but it rarely explains how they rose to lead it. Across interviews with Zimbabwean CFOs and finance directors, one thread recurs: a mentor, often early in their career, who pushed them toward responsibility they weren't sure they were ready for.

That guidance tends to matter most at the inflection points ordinary training doesn't cover — how to challenge a board assumption, when to walk away from a deal, how to rebuild credibility after a public misstep.

## Building a Culture of Sponsorship

The most effective mentoring relationships in finance go beyond advice-giving. Senior leaders who actively sponsor junior talent — recommending them for stretch assignments, vouching for them in rooms they aren't yet in — tend to produce faster, more durable career progression than informal coffee-chat mentoring alone.

For Zimbabwe's finance community, formalising that sponsorship — through structured programmes, cross-company pairing, or simply making time for it a stated leadership expectation — is increasingly seen as part of building the next generation of CFOs, not a nice-to-have on the side.
